cognitive linguistics in focus: conference at the University of Osnabrück puts language processing into the light

The University of Osnabrück will become the scene of the 10th International Annual Conference of the German Society for Cognitive Linguistics (DGKL) from September 4 to 6, 2024. Over 150 experts from different countries come together to discuss central questions about the connection between language and cognition.

The main question that the conference drives is: "What happens in the head when we talk to each other?" This topic touches the largely unexplored cognitive processes behind language processing. Cognitive linguistics in particular have become more important in modern language research because it assumes that human language skills are based on general cognitive skills and cannot be viewed in isolation.

"We approach this basic research with an open approach," explains Prof. Dr. Alexander Bergs, who organizes the event. According to Bergs, it is examined how language is used, from grammatical structures to the analysis of metaphors to the function of language in political communication and their role in artificial intelligence, such as in chatt.

The upcoming conference has far -reaching implications for society because it gives deeper insights into the way in which language influences our thinking and acting. Prof. Dr. Christian Schneider, Vice Dean of the Language and Literature Department, emphasizes how important this event is for Osnabrück: "The fact that such a conference takes place here is a strong signal for the international role of the humanities at our university."

This conference is not only a platform for scientific exchange, but also a sign that Osnabrück plays an important role in the international research landscape. In view of the current social challenges, the results of research in cognitive linguistics are becoming increasingly important.

For those interested, there is the possibility to register for the event, as there are still few places for external guests. On this occasion, topics of social interest and current research results can be discussed that expand the understanding of language and its effects on everyday life.

The conference is an excellent opportunity to increase the visibility of Osnabrück as a relevant location for linguistic research and to promote future developments in this dynamic and interdisciplinary area.
