Cologne Vice President of the Jews criticizes Israel's government and anti -Semitism
anti -Semitism in progressive rooms: a worrying development
The Vice President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, Abraham teacher, made the alarming signs of anti -Semitism visible in a recent interview, which occur in progressive, left and queer communities. This happened in the context of an argument about the behavior of the Israeli government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Teacher emphasized that criticism of Israeli politics should not lead to a departure from Israel's right to exist.
A particularly striking incident occurred in the early July during a queer solidarity party in Berlin. There, Jewish participants who wore a Pride flag with the Davidstern were attacked by other people present. Teacher found that this reveals a relapse into old anti -Semitic stereotypes. This stereotypical states that Jews cannot be seen as loyal citizens due to their connection to Israel. Such views are not only hurtful, but also endanger social cohesion.
Abraham teacher appeals to the majority society to show more civil courage. Especially after the violent attack by Hamas on October 7th, he demands a solidarity attitude towards Jews from the company. He describes the lack of this solidarity as a significant defect that endangers the state of democracy in Germany. "The more a minority is discriminated against and the more the majority tolerates this, the worse it is about our democracy," explains teacher.
teacher warns that a clear attitude against anti -Semitism can also mean sacrificing personal security and private freedom. "Many people in the education sector are at their limits and the provision of federal funds is a decisive factor," he says. Furthermore, he expressed hope that the upcoming state elections in Brandenburg, Thuringia and Saxony may decide against right -wing extremist and populist parties. "Our democracy is too precious to leave them up to these forces," concludes teacher.
In summary, it can be said that increasing aggressiveness towards Jewish individuals in progressive spaces is a serious challenge that requires broad social discussion. The message of Abraham teacher is clear: solidarity and civil courage have to go hand in hand to protect the values of an open, democratic society.
