Lawsuit against TUI Cruises for unrealistic net zero goals-DUH demands credible statements

The German Environmental Aid (DUH) has filed a lawsuit against the cruise provider TUI Cruises GmbH. The lawsuit refers to insufficiently justified net zero goals for the future. TUI Cruises announces the "decarbonized cruise operation" by 2050 and justifies this with unrealistic assumptions about the future availability of e-fuel, an alternative source for fossil fuels that have not yet been commercially produced. In addition, the company does not explain sufficiently where the required amounts of alternative fuels for shipping should come from. The DUH considers this to be a brazen deception of consumers and therefore filed a lawsuit to have the advertising statements checked in court.

Jürgen Resch, federal manager of the DUH, criticizes TUI Cruises for utopian announcement, from 2050 green methanol, other e-fuel and LNG (liquid natural gas) to use for the operation of their cruise ships. Resch points out that LNG is a fossil fuel and that Tui Cruises moves his actual engagement by 26 years into the future. The question also arises whether the green country current, which is planned for a "decarbonized cruise operation", will be available on the travel destinations. According to the DUH, the assumptions of TUI Cruises are foreign to the world and a deception of consumers.

Agnes Sauter, head of ecological market monitoring at DUH, indicates that companies that offer their products or services as “CO2 or climate-neutral” for the next few decades often only operate greenwashing. Measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will be relocated to the future and are difficult to check. Therefore, such advertising statements must be credibly justified and transparently presented for consumers.

It remains to be seen how the Hamburg Regional Court will decide on the complaint of the DUH against TUI Cruises.
