Child protection in sports: New guidelines for Berlin clubs from 2025!
The State Sports Association Berlin (LSB) has introduced pioneering new child protection guidelines that come into force for all Berlin sports associations from 2025. These regulations are not only intended for the safety of the children, but also financially linked: If there is no fulfillment, the associations must pay 50 cents per member under the age of 18. From 2026, clubs must also follow if they want to receive certain subsidies. In 2021, the LSB launched the child protection seal, which strengthens the efforts for a safe sport for children. According to Friedhard Teuffel, director of the LSB, this did not achieve the desired effect: "We want a broader effect."

In order to meet the new requirements, sports associations must adapt their statutes accordingly and offer training courses for supervisors and check certificates. The associations have time until June 30, 2025. The LSB expects around 600 to 700 clubs to train their supervisors in child protection measures in order to continue to participate in the funding programs. The LSB has increased its staff for the implementation: Several new jobs were created to organize prevention advice and training, while the existing positions for child protection officers were expanded.
Currently 27 associations, including the Berlin Football Association, have already met the prerequisites for the child protection seal. From 2026, associations who want to apply for financial aid must prove the seal. This means that many sports clubs in Berlin face new challenges to meet the requirements. In addition, the training costs per participant can be up to 28 euros in central training, while the total costs for workshops for a maximum of 30 participants are 200 euros.
