Kiez conflict: Uni against container village on the Mercedes-Benz site
The planned container village for 260 refugees on the fallow unibles on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem ensures violent protests, especially at the Free University. There is resistance to the project, since the university actually intended the area for the construction of teaching and research buildings. The universities of university feel that they have not been included in the planning.
Free university has justified that after 2023 it urgently needs the area for its own construction projects and therefore does not see no way to accommodate refugees in the long term. Previously, the university had already provided short -term support in the admission of refugees. The university proposes to use empty buildings of the Federal Real Estate Agency nearby, which used to be used as emergency accommodation for refugees.
At the end of March, the Berlin Senate decided 16 other locations for container villages in addition to the planned container village on Thielallee. This measure is part of an effort to fix the lack of apartments for refugees. Despite the planned establishment of other container villages, some districts such as Pankow already look critical of the admission of refugees, since these districts are already accommodating a high number of refugees.
The discussion about the use of the Uniigeländ in Steglitz-Zehlendorf and the protests of the FU Berlin against the container village have led to ridicule and anger on social media. Some users criticize the university that it speaks against the temporary accommodation of refugees, although it otherwise presents itself as cosmopolitan and tolerant. The topic is discussed controversially, whereby the demand for decentralized accommodations for refugees is in the foreground.
