Kiez in turmoil: container village or university building?
The property on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem, which is used as a parking lot, could soon serve as a container village for 260 refugees. However, the plans of the Senate encounter resistance, especially from the Free University (FU). The FU is indignant that the decision was made without its consent. The President of the University, Günter Ziegler, emphasizes that the university management was not included in the planning and only learned from the newspaper from the Senate plans.
The FU is basically ready to support refugee people according to their possibilities. In the past, the university has already provided emergency accommodation for refugees at short notice. However, it is pointed out that the property is required for its own construction work after 2023. The university proposes to use empty buildings of the Federal Real Estate Agency nearby as an alternative for refugee accommodation.
The special representative for refugee questions at the Senate, Broemme, is looking intensively for free space for the accommodation of refugees. He emphasizes the need to use the fallow property for short -term refugee accommodation. The Senate decided to build 16 other container villages at the end of March because the need for accommodation for refugees is still high.
The planned locations for the container villages extend mostly to the eastern part of the city, with some districts already taking a large part of the capital residents. This leads to an imbalance in the distribution of refugees. The displeasure of the resistance of the FU and other advisers shows itself on social media, where users criticize the university for alleged inconsistencies in supporting refugees.
