Kaul mading saved: Viktoriapark becomes an amphibian hotspot!

Viktoriapark, Berlin, Deutschland - nag/NAG editorial team - in the popular Viktoriapark in Kreuzberg, conservationists recently started a dramatic rescue operation for tadpoles. The park's waterfall had temporarily fallen dry due to a pump failure, which brought thousands of tadpoles in mortal danger. Dirk Schäuble, a representative of the BUND Berlin, and his team transported the small amphibians back into the pond in buckets to save them. The successful campaign ensures the survival of the ambush until the coming spring while looking for protection in their winter quarters.

A new study by the federal government has shown that the small waters in the districts of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Mitte, Treptow-Köpenick and Spandau are in better condition compared to other parts of the city. Over half of the waters examined offers potentially good habitats for amphibians. The positive development may be due to the rainy year 2023, which has filled many ponds that have been dry for years. Nevertheless, there are challenges, especially through dirty rainwater that reduces the quality of life in the waters. The federal government calls for specific measures to improve and maintain small water from Berlin in order to maintain the biodiversity and the ecological state of the city.
