Young people in shock: man threatens with a weapon in Weißensee!

Liebermannstraße, 13086 Berlin, Deutschland - yesterday evening there was a dangerous incident in Weißensee, in which three young people were threatened by a man with a firearm. According to a press release from the Berlin police, the incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. in an empty building on Liebermannstrasse.

The affected young people, two 15-year-olds and a 14-year-old, were approached by a 55-year-old suspect who threatened to shoot them if they did not leave the building immediately. The man held a firearm in one hand and one emergency hammer in the other and expressed loud threats several times. The youngsters fled the building and left a bag from which a smartphone and a camcorder were later stolen.

arrests and investigations

The police alarm led to the fact that special forces and an emergency hundreds arrived on site. The alleged perpetrator could be arrested quickly near the crime scene. In addition, another 50-year-old man who also matched the description of the perpetrator was arrested in the building. However, no firearm or the stolen objects were found during the search of both arrested.

The younger teenager who escaped unharmed was released after an identity assessment. The older man, on the other hand, was taken into police custody for detection treatment and then released again. During the investigation, Liebermannstraße between Berliner Allee and Rennbahnstrasse was closed. The responsible section commissioner has now taken over the investigation into threats with weapons, theft and a violation of the weapons law.

context on weapons laws

gun ownership and the handling of weapons are subject to strict laws in Germany. The Weapons authority of the State Criminal Police Office regulates the exhibition of weapon possession cards, hunting certificates and small gun certificates. Citizens can submit applications online or by post, but weapons can only be brought in special situations, which was obviously not the case in the present case.

A similar incident recently occurred in Munich when a young person was found on a school premises with a softair weapon. This incident was also reported to the police and led to a use of several patrol cars. The young person, who had received the weapon from a classmate, was secured by civilian officials. Here, too, legal steps were made due to the threat and violation of the weapons law, which underlines the serious consequences of such actions, such as rosenheim24 reported.
