Is the renovated house of the Berlin publisher the best building of the past three years? - Architecture Prize Berlin Kürt Berlin's most successful building design

The Berlin Architecture Prize is imminent and the freshly renovated house of the Berlin publisher on Alexanderplatz is one of the nominees. The press house was reconstructed in terms of monument and expanded contemporary, which makes it an architectural highlight in the city. A total of 85 competitors compete for the coveted title. A five-member specialist jury will choose the best building design of Berlin, while at the same time there is also a audience vote in which everyone can vote for their favorite by email.

Interestingly, the audience has repeatedly ensured surprising winners in the last three elections. At the premiere of the architecture award in 2013, for example, a playful daycare center won in a former factory on the outskirts of Lichterfelde, which was set up by the newcomers from "Baukind". This year the parish hall on Dahlemerl Gelfertstraße is particularly unpretentious and has a good chance of the audience award. The architects "Reccius & Baragiotta" made student of living studies with bright colors and sloping lines. Another discovery is the forest kindergarten, which is located on the S-Bahn embankment behind Tegel and was originally developed for Schwäbisch Gmünd by the "Klaiber+Oettle" office.

The jury's judgment, on the other hand, is easier to predict. Since 1992 the most prominent projects or most well -known design teams have been awarded. This time it could be David Chipperfield's basic renovation of the new National Gallery, which has received numerous prizes for his work. Chipperfield has added nothing of its own to the Mies-van-der-Rohe Temple and was praised for this in many ways.

The favorite projects also include the Rotes Rathaus underground station of "Collignon Architecture", which is described as dynamic and impressive, as well as the THF Tower, which was transformed into a viewing platform by the Swiss cultural building specialists ": MLZD". The Bricks project of "Graft", in which the main post from Schöneberg was imaginatively transformed into a state-of-the-art mixed-us complex, also has a good chance. Other favorites include the Spore Initiative, which a Festspielhaus created in a cemetery in Hermannstrasse in Neukölln, as well as the Nashorn Pagoda in the Zoo, which was designed by "Dan Pearlman Adventure Architecture".

However, it is also surprising what is missing on the list of candidates. No designer assumes responsibility for Berlin's numerous traffic calms and the environment of the Humboldt Forum, which is often referred to as the "paving desert", is the only freedom on the list. Innovative answers to ecological, social and financial challenges seem to be in short supply in the German architectural scene. Only one of five completions selected by the jury goes the tried and tested path of the existing one and relies on upgrading instead of new building - the press house on Alexanderplatz. A victory in this category would therefore be justified.

Until August 28th, all interested online can give their voice for the audience award. The result remains to be seen until the specialist jury and the audience announce their decisions.
