Israel after October 7th: Teaching and solutions for security - an analysis
When the first reports of dozens of terrorists from Gaza and who arrived in the morning of October 7, the first reports came from Gaza and arrested Israelis over the news agencies, the shock was great: nobody thought that the so massively technological and strictly monitored border that separates Israel from the gaza strip could simply be overcome by a few men with motorcycles and paragliders. And nobody suspected that there were several thousand men who were fire, murdered, raped women and brought children and old people into their control.
Israel was suddenly as vulnerable as nobody thought possible. Not even the Israelis themselves. Now six months have passed. The war that the Hamas attack has triggered still rages, no ending is in sight.
Israel after October 7 is no longer the country that it was before. The most expensive monitoring, the strongest walls, they do not protect. You can draw two lessons from this that could not be more different.
The first is: even more control, even more military violence. Send thousands of soldiers and civilians from Israel to Gaza to fill areas and to push the people back in enclaves in order to prevent some of them from declaring terrorists and attacking Israel. This solution has been tested for decades: in West Bank. Israel holds the areas west of the Jordan river. A lot of money flows into this crew, many lives have demanded. Most recently mainly on the Palestinian side, but also under Israelis.
The second apprenticeship from October 7 would be that the hardest hand, the sharpest control does not offer any security as long as there is no political solution. There are moderate forces on both sides, on Israelis and among Palestinians who have long understood it. What is missing are political tours that take such steps. It requires courage to risk new models - much more courage than any war plan. Anyone who believes that a two-state solution is only in the interest of the Palestinians is wrong.
The press release provides information about the shocking attack by dozens of Gaza terrorists on October 7 of last year. It is emphasized that no one had expected that the heavily monitored border could be overcome so easily. The perpetrators set up massive devastation and brought people into their violence. Since then there has been a persistent war.
The text notes that the expensive security measures and walls do not guarantee protection. Two possible teachings are drawn from the situation: the first is an even strict control and military violence, while the second supports a political solution.
It is mentioned that Israel already holds the West Bank and that this has demanded a lot of lives, both on the Palestinian and Israeli side. The second option emphasizes the lack of political tours that take courageous steps to solve the conflict. It is pointed out that a two-state solution is not only in the interests of the Palestinians, but also benefits the Israelis.
In the table below, some facts about the conflict between Israel and Gaza are listed:
[Insert a table with information about the conflict]The press release was published in Berlin, so local references or effects may not be directly relevant. However, Berlin is a city with an important Jewish community that is certainly interested in news from Israel. There are also various political groups in Berlin that deal with the Middle East conflict and possibly have opinions about the proposed solutions. Historically, Berlin also played an important role in the peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine, especially during the Oslo Peace process in the 1990s.
