International young people beautify Reinickendorf's cemeteries: a commitment to the common good

international commitment to the preservation of cultural sites in Reinickendorf

A remarkable event took place in the Reinickendorf district when a group of 15 young people from different countries were involved in the care of cemeteries for two weeks. The work camp, organized by the Ecumenical Youth Service (ÖJD), was carried out for the third time in a row and received praising recognition from the youth councilor Alexander Ewers (SPD), who personally received the group in the town hall. Ewers thanked warmly for her commitment and commitment to the common good.

diverse tasks to preserve historical sites

In the first week, the group focused on maintaining the "old institutional cemetery" on the site of the former Wittenauer Heilstätten. This cemetery is to be made accessible as a memorial for the victims of the Nazi rule from 1933 to 1945. In the second week, the young people worked at various locations, including the Dorfanger Alt-Wittenau and the village church of Wittenau. A special task was to maintain the war graves at the Martin Luther Kirchhof of the Evangelical parish of Tegel-Borsigwalde under the guidance of the local cemetery employee.

international participants

The participants of the work camp came from countries such as Egypt, Brazil, Pakistan, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary and Iran. They found their accommodation free of charge in the youth leisure facility Fuchsbau in Reinickendorf. The diversity of nationalities and the common goal of maintaining cultural sites testify to an inspiring international engagement in Reinickendorf.

This year's work camp ends on August 3, 2024 and leaves a noticeable positive effect on the care and maintenance of the historical cemeteries in Reinickendorf.
