Insect hostel in Frankfurt Galluswarte: A step to more biodiversity
A real flower frenzy in Frankfurt! The city is now getting greener! In Galluswarte, the first A&O insect hostel has opened its doors and promises to improve the microclimate and to attract numerous plants and insects. This innovative joint project by A&O Educare, the city of Frankfurt and the Fresenius Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences was inaugurated last week. Ralf Olk, chairman of A&O Educare, proudly announces: "A pilot project that will now be a template for other A&O locations!"
The effects are enormous! City councilor Tina Zapf-Rodriguez, responsible for the climate and the environment, emphasizes: "An insect hotel is more than just a nice accessory. Her role for biodiversity and food security cannot be assessed high enough." A real call to aware of the importance of nature in urban rooms!
an experiment with great goals
Malina Wagner, General Manager of the A&O Frankfurt Galluswarte, is enthusiastic about the colorful flower meadow and the happy, humming insects on her doorstep. "We want to sensitize our guests and the neighbors to the urgently needed biological diversity," she says. This not only beautifies the neighborhood, but also a strong sign of more respect for nature!
And that's just the beginning! This project is part of the comprehensive sustainability strategy "Net Zero 2025" by A&O. With a total of 40 houses in ten countries, A&O leads the hostel group in Europe and has clear goals in terms of environmental protection.
cooperation and commitment
Under the direction of Sabine Böhling, students from the Fresenius Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences designed the concept for this biodiversity, supported by the city of Frankfurt. A quick and smooth implementation was the goal and they achieved it! A true prime example of community work! Span>
HASCHORTER PATRICK Trumpfheller plays a key role in maintaining the new wildflower bed. He knows how important the right treatment is and compares the maintenance of the bed with a soccer field: "Brush twice a year and pour it regularly!"
a & o in numbers : 2000 founded, the group now operates 40 hostels with around 28,500 beds, distributed all over Europe. With a record of 6.1 million overnight stays in 2023 and steadily increasing popularity among backpackers, business travelers and families, A&O shows that sustainable tourism can also be a real business!
But the A&O insect hostel is more than just a place for overnight stays. It is a sign of hope and responsibility towards our environment. The flowers and the variety of insects are now part of urban life in Frankfurt - a real model for other cities!
