Important development in energy technology: Infineon nominated for future prize

The Infineon Technologies AG has emerged through a groundbreaking innovation in the field of Hochvolt transistor technology. Your newly developed silicon carbide mosfet with a vertical channel, known as the Trench mosfet, is offered in the 3300 V voltage class and could have far-reaching effects on the energy transition.

Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will present the German Future Prize 2024 in Berlin on November 27, one of the highest awards for technology and innovation in Germany. Infineon's nominated technology could not only significantly increase energy savings, but also revolutionize all areas of electromobility.

The silicon carbide chip reduces the switching losses by up to 90 percent and thus offers large savings potential, especially in the drive of trains, in solar parks and in wind turbines. This is particularly relevant in times when climate change and the search for sustainable energy solutions are the focus of social discourse.

Powerful semiconductors such as MOSFETs are indispensable for the electrification of large machines and systems. Trench mosfets enable improved performance efficiency because the current flow runs vertically and thus increases the cell density per area. This technology is crucial to increase the efficiency of energy conversions and thus minimize losses.

The project manager Dr. Konrad Schraml said: "For us it is a matter close to the heart to develop innovative solutions that lay the basis for environmentally friendly mobility." The development of this new energy technology impressively shows that technological progress is closely combined with the need to reduce ecological footprint and to promote the transition to a greener energy future.

The cooperation with the Technical University of Chemnitz becomes even clearer the importance of research and development for achieving sustainability goals. Dr. Peter Wawer, President of Infineon, emphasizes that innovative energy solutions are a core component in the fight against climate change. This is particularly relevant for the current debate about environmentally friendly technologies.

The new Coolsic ™ XHP ™ 2 modules could not only optimize industrial electricity generation, but also have positive effects on residents that benefit from a reduced noise development, especially if trains drive through residential areas. If a diesel -electric locomotive is equipped with this technology, it can save up to 300 mWh annually - enough to supply 100 single -family houses.

This nomination for the German Future Prize is not only an award for Infineon, but also illustrates how important innovations are for society. Infineon technology could serve as an example of how companies actively contribute to solving the pressing challenges that climate change brings.

In view of the current challenges that society and the economy face, the development of such technologies is of immense importance for ensuring a sustainable energy supply, which makes both ecologically and economically sensible. Infineon thus takes an important step towards a future -proof and environmentally friendly energy infrastructure.
