Hunger strike activist after 42 days: pressure on Chancellor Scholz increases
In the science fiction novel "Hitchhiker through the Galaxy", the number 42 is presented in response to the all-important question about the meaning of life. Wolfgang Metzeler expressed this on the occasion of his 42nd hunger day in front of the Chancellery in Berlin. Metzeler, a 49-year-old engineer for technical environmental protection, entered the hunger strike to force a serious answer from Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz to the climate crisis. He intends to build pressure through his radical action by ultimately putting death in the room.
Metzeler is not the only activist who chose this path. In the past, several last generation activists in the Spreebogen Park joined the hunger strike to force a meeting with the candidates for chancellor at the time. Only two activists continued their hunger strike and ultimately achieved a conversation with Scholz. Metzeler also announced a thirst strike to increase the pressure on the government, but received no reaction.
Metzeler led the hunger strike, followed by other hungry in the camp. The campaign "Hunger, until you are honest" demands a radical change in climate policy, since civilization is extremely at risk from the climate catastrophe. The support of other activists, such as 21-year-old Linda Doblinger, shows the endeavor to make honest and scientific facts about the threat of the climate catastrophe.
Despite the pressure on the part of the activists, the Chancellery emphasized that climate policy was on the right track and that it was not discussed on individual demands. This led to Metzeler's statement that the government wanted to ignore his protest and ultimately let him die. This drastic exaggeration illustrates the seriousness of the hunger strike as a means of protest against inactivity in the climate crisis.
