Title: suspicious racer in Berlin: charge for illegal car racing, driving without a license and escape
The Berlin public prosecutor has charged charges against a suspected racer. He is accused of having organized an illegal motor vehicle race without being in possession of a driving license and committing after an accident. The incident occurred on the evening of December 17, 2022, when the accused drove through the city at a speed of up to 163 kilometers per hour, although only 50 kilometers per hour are allowed in this area.
During his escape from the police, the racer at the intersection of Heer and Glockenturmstraße in Westend is said to have run over a red traffic light and lost control of his vehicle when turning. This led to a collision with another traffic light. Although he tried to flee on foot, he could finally be arrested. The capital Berlin is now a hotspot for illegal car racing nationwide. Last year, the Berlin judiciary initiated investigations against speeders in a total of 755 cases. Another incident occurred at the end of May when the police stopped an 18-year-old who was on the A115 at a speed of 280 kilometers per hour, while only 100 kilometers per hour were allowed.
Since a change in the law in October 2017, higher punishments have been planned for such offenses. At that time, illegal motor vehicle races were raised from an administrative offense to a criminal offense.
The indictment for illegal car racing, driving without a driver's license and an escape of the accident against the alleged racer is now being negotiated before the Tiergarten district court.
