Flood in Russia: Ural River continues to increase

The flood situation in the south of the Ural Mountains in Russia has further tightened. In the city of Orenburg, the Urals river was 9.78 meters high on Wednesday morning, which is about half a meter above the critical brand. This led to several parts of the city under water. It is expected that the water will increase by another 30 to 70 centimeters, which would make the situation worse.

In the Orenburg administrative area, 12,800 houses and 14,900 garden plots are flooded, which led to more than 7,000 people to leave their houses. The water masses forced several villages to switch off their substances, which led to power failures. The local infrastructure was badly affected, with courts that had to hire their work, and museums that brought works of art to safety.

The population in the Orenburg region demands more help from the authorities and directed the call for help "Putin Hilf!" to the president. According to critics, the authorities are insufficiently prepared and react slowly to the natural disaster. The massive snow and ice melt in the Ural Mountains, accompanied by persistent precipitation, further tightened.

The flood in Russia is caused by dam breaks at the city of Orsk and the greatly increased water levels in the Urals and other rivers in the region. The situation is also worrying in neighboring regions such as Kurgan in southwestern Siberia, with huge flooded areas and evacuations of people. Russian state media describe the flood as a "flood of the century with apocalyptic dimensions".
