Representatives of the Berlin economy welcome the end of the planned conversion of the Halle bank to the Green Promenade. "As striving for the conversion of the street space, the plans for this should be based on the reality of a metropolis," said Jan Eder, General Manager of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK).
"Without the B96, more than 4000 trucks would have to switch to the neighborhood every day to ensure supply and disposal for the city. This is neither in terms of traffic safety nor noise protection and would therefore hardly receive planning rights," said Eder. The Halle bank is part of the federal road B96, which runs through Berlin in the north-south direction.
Before it had become known that the Senate stops the conversion of the Halle bank into a pure promenade for pedestrians and cyclists. In a letter from Secretary of State Claudia Elif Stutz (CDU) to the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district, it was said that the prospects of success of the project were "low" due to even unknown traffic questions.
The federal government promoted the project in the millions
The redesigned redesign by the district envisaged to recreate the road north of the Landwehr Canal between the Kulturforum and Urbanhafen on a 1.7-kilometer section and to create a green bank promenade, with for cyclists and pedestrians. Car traffic should only lead over the Tempelhofer bank south of the canal.
The federal government had granted the project with 2.95 million euros in funding from the investment program "National Projects of Urban Surroundings" last year. Criticism of the Senate's stop came from Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg's district mayor Clara Herrmann (Greens) and the coalition partner SPD in the House of Representatives and the left-wing faction.
Jürgen Wittke, general manager of the Berlin Chamber of Crafts, said: "Many craftsmen have hardly any choice of transport and can only switch to public transport or the load bike. A bank promenade on the Halleschen bank would therefore be diametrically accommodated."
The main traffic artery is already heavily burdened today. An “infarction” threatens, the traffic should be narrowed in fewer traces and the traffic is pushed into the nearby residential areas. "The objective of a city worth living with efficient business is hollowed out twice on this example," criticized Wittke.
climate conductor calls for the Senate not to stop
State Secretary Stutz also referred to the residential areas and the effects on traffic: It must be ensured that "powerful main roads are still available for supply and accessibility in the city," she wrote to the district. Traffic should not be pushed into the living body through such measures.
The climate council Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg was horrified by the Senate decision. "The decision of the Senate Administration and its senator makes it clear that there is no interest in countering climate change with sensible measures," says a resolution of the advisory board, which the district office should advise on the implementation of climate goals.
