New contracts for payments for port workers: Members of Verdi should vote on offers

The country association Verdi plans to have their members in the German ports voted on the job offers in the ongoing contracts for contracts. This vote will take place before the Federal Lawyers' Commission, which will meet on August 22nd and 23rd in Berlin. In the fourth round of negotiations, employers presented two different solutions.

Verdi expressed disappointment that the offer did not meet your expectations. However, some of the demands of the Central Association of German Harbor Industry (ZDS) have been accepted. The first variant of the offer includes a term of twelve months and a tax and duty-free adaptation bonus of 1000 euros. In addition, the hour wages would increase by 0.95 euros from January 1, 2025, as well as the shift allowances and the vacation allowance compared to the first variant. The second variant extends over sixteen months and includes an adaptation bonus of 1400 euros. The hourly wages and layer allowances would increase by 1.55 euros, as well as the vacation allowance.

The employers were previously under pressure by Warnstreks from Verdi who had affected the ports of Hamburg, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven, Emden and Brake. The ZDS emphasized that the offers would lead to significant actual wage increases. "The offer is on the limit of economic load -bearing capacity and represents significant challenges for the port companies," said the negotiator of the ZDS, Torben Seebold.

During the wage talks,

Verdi called for a wage increase of three euros per hour for over 10,000 employees in the ports from June 1, 2024, coupled with corresponding adjustments to the shift allowances. The association strives for a contract term of twelve months.

The Verdi members discussed the employers' wage offers from the fourth round of negotiations during the meetings. Despite some accepted claims, the Verdi members were dissatisfied with the initial offer, which could have a potentially impact on port workers.
