Green week without animals: What is the reason for the exceptions?

The green week is just around the corner and brings unexpected changes. From January 17th to 26th the renowned agricultural fair will take place on the exhibition center in Berlin, but without the planned couplers such as cattle, sheep and goats. The reason for this is the latest spread of the mouth and claw disease, which was discovered in a water buffalo herd in Hönow. Lars Jaeger, director of the Green Week, said: "In coordination with the veterinary office, we will not have a paired shoemen on site." Instead, the program is redesigned to improvise with other animals such as horses and donkeys. Despite these measures, the organizers expect around 300,000 guests and 1,400 exhibitors during the event. As RBB24 reported, an alliance of around 60 organizations calls for a demonstration in Berlin at the same time to fight for a social-ecological agricultural turn.

political tensions for the Bundestag election

The political landscape in Germany is also shaped by heated debates. Lars Klingbeil, head of the SPD, made serious allegations against the Greens by accusing them of “becoming a junior partner of the Union”. In an interview with the Tagesspiegel, Klingbeil expressed his concerns about the plans of the CDU/CSU, which would make "unstoppable promises". The SPD leader emphasized that the Greens did not play on victory and, in particular, criticized Friedrich Merz because he has had hardly any government experience. Klingbeil is convinced that the SPD will achieve a much better result in the next Bundestag election than is currently being seen in the surveys.

The Bundestag election on February 23, as another facet of political pressure, was due after the traffic light coalition from SPD, Greens and FDP broke in November. Klingbeil is optimistic and expects the surveys in January, while the political scope will become narrower in the run -up to the election. Overall, it turns out that both social and political issues will shape the coming weeks and that the discussions should be intense.
