Great evacuation in Berlin-Marzahn: World War II bomb is defused
A 500 kilogram world war bomb was discovered in Berlin-Marzahn, which led to the evacuation of a 500-meter barrier circuit. Around 15,300 residents, three schools, two daycare centers, various shops and 27 apartment blocks are affected by the evacuation. So far, about ten percent of the area concerned have been evacuated. The evacuation measures started at 6 a.m. and the police are planning to defuse the bomb around 12 noon.
Emergency accommodations were set up for the residents concerned, which are designed for a total of 800 people. Around 50 people have already gathered in the accommodations. A shuttle service has also been set up by bus. The evacuation area was divided into an east and west area, whereby the southern part of the blocking circle is first evacuated.
For support and information, a citizen phone was set up, which can be reached from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. under various telephone numbers. People who are limited or dependent on medication were asked to report to the citizens' phone and take their medication in sufficient quantities. Pets should also be well cared for in advance.
In the evacuation area there is also a refugee accommodation and a facility for homeless people. Measures were taken to ensure that the evacuation is communicated with a language, especially with regard to refugees with war experience. In addition, there is a separate emergency accommodation for refugees.
Some streets are closed due to the evacuation, and rail traffic, especially the S-Bahn line 7 and the RB25, is expected to be interrupted around 12 noon. Even some BVG bus lines will not drive and trips in the affected area.
The bomb was discovered on a sports field on Tuesday, during a planned probing after ammunition load. The evacuation has so far been according to plan and the citizens' phone is well received.
