Large railway construction sites: Berlin Central Station from February only half open!
The Berlin main train station will be faced with massive restrictions from February 2025. Deutsche Bahn has confirmed that due to extensive construction measures, the lower tracks of the station must be blocked on each other on each other. Of the eight tracks of the lower level, only four will remain usable, which significantly restricted the company. On two long weekends it is also planned to close the entire underground train station and the north-south tunnel. These measures are planned in the long term and were already taken into account when creating the timetable for 2025, as the Deutsche Bahn of Berliner Zeitung announced.
comprehensive construction work out of necessity
The decision on these interventions was necessary to cope with the increasing traffic requirements in long-distance and local transport in Berlin. With 329,000 travelers every day, the Berlin main station is one of the four most frequented long -distance stations in Germany. According to Deutsche Bahn, new traffic concepts should enable the infrastructure to adapt, including better flexibility in the event of disorders. The main station, which was opened in 2006, was quickly stamped out of the ground, which now shows long -term consequences.
As part of the "European Year of Rail", which was proclaimed in 2021, Deutsche Bahn has also focused on a sustainable turnaround. While according to Deutsche Bahn The goods transport on the rail and kilometers only 17 grams of greenhouse gases-six times less than a truck-is emphasized that the rail transport is also the more environmentally friendly transport. Richard Lutz, CEO of the DB, warns that the climate goals in Germany cannot be reached without massive traffic. Deutsche Bahn therefore relies on innovative initiatives and projects to position the rail as a central element of the climate protection strategy.
