Gröner: Why the building contractor is paused in Berlin

Christoph Gröner, one of the leading builders in Germany, has had its business location in Berlin for two years, but nothing new is being built in the capital. Gröner had generously donated 820,000 euros to the Berlin CDU in 2020 and commented at a future forum in Berlin as a convinced social democrat. He also expressed that the construction costs "got completely out of hand".

GRÖNER emphasizes that it is not the building itself, which makes living priceless, but the extremely high property prices in cities such as Munich and Hamburg. The costs for land in Berlin have also increased significantly in recent years, which makes it difficult to build new apartments. Gröner notes that the scarcity of land was left to the speculators, which drives the prices up.

The building contractor explains that the purchasing power in Berlin is no longer sufficient to cover the extremely high rental prices and thus make profitable construction impossible. Gröner has invested significantly less in Berlin in the past two years, since the property prices have exploded and no more profitable projects have been possible.

GRÖNER calls for better use of the existing resources for housing, such as covering motorways, to make room for new apartments. He criticizes the political ideology, which often hinders housing, and advocates a master plan that causes all political parties to focus on creating more living space.

The entrepreneur emphasizes the need to quickly and effectively build more apartments in order to combat the lack of housing and prevent despairs such as political extremism from increasing. Gröner underlines the importance of a common commitment of all political parties to successfully meet the challenges in housing in Berlin and other cities in Germany.
