GEZ-Revolution: Is the 2025 broadcasting contribution increasing by 58 cents?

The discussion about the GEZ fee takes a new turn. According to a report by Berlin Live, there is a fundamental reform that could tip the approval of the federal states to increase the broadcasting contribution. Instead of an obligatory approval, the federal states will only have to become active in the future if they object to the Commission's proposals to determine the financial requirements of the broadcasting institution (KEF). This means that an increase comes into force directly if there are no objections from the federal states. Critics have concerns about this regulation: Among other things, the question arises as to why the countries give their powers as carelessly as some readers show live in the comments on Berlin. "Could this lead to a self -service of the transmitters?" Ask concerned. This new regulation, which is intended to serve the financial resources of the public law, raises more questions than it answers.

But the financial side also does not remain uncontrovers. As of January 1, 2025, the broadcasting contribution could increase from currently EUR 18.36 by 58 cents to 18.94 euros, as experts from Fr.de report. This increase is recommended by the KEF and must be decided by the federal states. However, the decision -making authorities have not yet finally decided whether the alleged increase is actually implemented. In the event of a delay, the broadcasters may have to move back to the Federal Constitutional Court to secure their financing models. So far, the federal states that determine the amount of the contribution as part of a state contract have not yet officially agreed. The pressure on those responsible is growing in view of the high financial requirements of the broadcasting facilities and the associated adjustments.

total finance in view

In 2022, ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandradio achieved total yields of around 8.6 billion euros. But the situation is tense because around 3.2 million contribution accounts are in delay or enforcement. While digitization and competition with streaming providers are increasing, it remains to be seen how the federal states will evaluate the need for a contribution adjustment and the resulting financial consequences for the public broadcasters. The discussion about the reasonable amount of the broadcasting contribution is more current than ever, and the citizens are likely to pursue how the whole thing develops.
