Active acts at German train stations are dramatic - federal police warn of increasing danger

Dangerous acts of violence at German train stations continue to increase, as can be seen from a secret document of the federal police. Compared to 2019, there was recently an increase of 28.4 percent with the acts of violence. The increase is even more drastic when you look at the year 2021, in which fewer travelers were traveling due to the corona pandemic. Here the increase in violent acts is 38.6 percent. Over two such crimes are recorded per hour.

The main train stations of Hamburg, Hanover and Nuremberg as well as from Frankfurt/Main, Berlin, Cologne, Munich, Dortmund, Leipzig and Düsseldorf are particularly affected. During the time of the 9-euro ticket, especially in the evening and on weekends, there was a violent increase in violence. At train stations, the number of acts of violence increased by 31 percent in these summer months, even by 46 percent in regional and local trains.

The increased use of knives and other dangerous objects is particularly worrying. Compared to 2019, the number of acts with knife use increased by 44.5 percent. The use of dangerous tools has even increased by 80.4 percent.

In 2022, 5461 travelers were threatened, which represents an increase of 120 percent compared to 2019. The number of bodily harm increased by 22 percent. According to the federal police, 53 percent of the suspects were German citizens and 47 percent were non-German citizens.

The number of sex offenses has also increased. These have risen by 43 percent. There were 78 cases in which travelers were deliberately pushed into the track. 57 people were injured, one of them died. In 2019, 60 such incidents were registered.

Thefts at train stations have also increased significantly. Manuel Ostermann, head of the German Federal Police Union, describes the numbers as frightening and states that people avoid these places. He urgently demands 3500 additional civil servants for the railway area to counteract this development.
