Court negotiates color attack on the Brandenburg Gate: Climate activists in focus!
On September 17, 2023, there was a spectacular color attack on the Berlin landmark, the Brandenburg Gate. Two women, Kathrin H. (29) from Hamburg and Marlen S. (35) from Lichtenberg, are now on trial for serious property damage. The estimated damage through their actions, as part of a protest initiated by the group "Last Generation", amounts to around 115,000 euros. In the attack, six sandstone columns with orange and yellow color were sprayed, which is now being negotiated in a high -security hall of the Berlin District Court, as BZ reported.
During the negotiation, the accused grin on the dock, while their supporters smashed in the rows of spectators. In their statements, both women emphasize that they were not interested in damage to the monument, but wanted to convey their messages against the climate crisis. Kathrin H. explains: "The environmental disaster is also a crisis of justice, the mass cannot afford to escape her!" Her colleague, Marlen S., adds that she wanted to symbolically left ecological footprints in the color of the color. But the defense demands a suspension of the negotiation. This is done under the pretext that in several federal states against climate activists to form a criminal association, which requires a review of the responsible public prosecutor.
judicial discussion about climate protection measures
The district judge will announce on January 31, how the procedure will continue. It will be interesting to observe whether these legal disputes are a precedent for similar actions by climate activists. The question of legal responsibility and the limits of protest are therefore in space, while the discussion about climate protection and activism gains in social explosiveness, as is mentioned in a book about the German crew in Crete. There, social struggles and resistance to authority are discussed, which underlines the relevance of the current trial. You can find out more on this topic in this book. Source .
