Wrong-way driver accident on A24: Hazardous goods truck blocks Neuruppin!
On September 5, 2025, there was an accident on Autobahn 24 near Neuruppin (Ostprignitz-Ruppin district), which resulted in significant traffic restrictions. A truck carrying dangerous goods overturned on Thursday morning and presented the emergency services with a major challenge. The driver, a 66-year-old man, lost control of his vehicle in a curve while driving into the “Am Rhinluch” parking lot and was taken to hospital with minor injuries, as rbb24 reports.
The accident resulted in the A 24 in the direction of Berliner Ring being completely closed for some time. Luckily, the vehicle's tank remained undamaged, meaning no hazardous substances escaped. Nevertheless, the overturned truck had to be refilled, and the recovery of the vehicle is planned for Friday using greater technology. The shoulder and parking lot in the affected area remain closed.
Consequences of the accident and safety measures
In the event of the incident, immediate measures were taken to protect people and the environment. A exclusion circle of around 100 meters was set up around the scene of the accident. The rescue work could last until the evening hours, although a complete closure of the A 24 in both directions cannot be ruled out, as Tagesspiegel reports.
The handling of hazardous substances is subject to strict legal regulations, which are regulated in the Hazardous Goods Transport Act (GGBefG) and the corresponding hazardous goods regulations. These regulations are designed to define protective measures to prevent incidents like this or minimize their impact. The occupational health and safety departments of the district governments are responsible for monitoring compliance with regulations during all phases of transportation, from the acceptance and delivery of the goods to the packing and unpacking as well as the loading and unloading of the goods. Arbeitsschutz NRW emphasizes that these regulations also apply to small and medium-sized companies.
The incident on the A 24 is an example of the challenges that have to be overcome when transporting dangerous goods. Such transport can potentially pose risks to people, the environment and public safety. Therefore, proper training and supervision of everyone involved is of utmost importance to minimize the risks.
