Five research teams fight against endometriosis in Berlin!

The Senate of Berlin took an important step on December 17, 2024 to improve the situation of women with endometriosis and adenomyosis. At the initiative of the Senator for Science, Health and Care, Dr. Ina Czyborra was decided to report the urgency of further research on these largely unexplored diseases. National funds of up to 15 million euros have been promised for the next three years to strengthen basic research in this area, such as Five new interdisciplinary research groups have been working on the investigation of the causes of illness of endometriosis since September 1, 2024. The aim of these comprehensive studies is to understand the pathomechanisms of the disease, which is of crucial importance for prevention and the development of effective therapies. Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger emphasized the need to draw more attention to endometriosis, since it is estimated that up to 15 percent of women of childbearing age are affected. Often this painful illness is only recognized after years, which significantly affects the quality of life of those affected. Here the new research initiatives come to enable faster diagnoses and better treatments, such as the BMBF explained.

The five research associations are located in Berlin, Münster, Tübingen and Ulm and are under international and interdisciplinary accompaniment. They deal with various aspects of the disease, from the effects on fertility to the chronic pain, which often go hand in hand with endometriosis. It is also examined how endometriosis interacts with the immune system as well as nutrition and microbiomes in the intestine. The aim is to improve the medical care strategy for affected women and to visibly strengthen health research.

These initiated research projects are not only important for the scientific community, but also for the women concerned. They represent a first step in the direction of a fairer and more effective health care that focuses on the specific needs of women.
