Stumbling block laying: Memory of the Landeck family
The artist and initiator of the Stumbling Stone project, Gunter Demnig, will lay three stumbling blocks for the Landeck family in Friedrichshain. With the stumbling blocks, people are reminiscent of people who were persecuted and murdered by the National Socialists at the last voluntary place of residence. District Mayor Clara Herrmann emphasizes the importance of the stumbling blocks as a memory of the victims and as an appeal to the responsibility that these crimes must never repeat themselves.
The Landeck family, consisting of Kurt, Paula and her daughter Bela, lived in the house at Friedrichsberger Straße 7 before they were victims of the Holocaust. Kurt Landeck was a Jewish businessman who was persecuted by the Nazis under the boycott of Jewish business people and his political attitude. He initially fled to France, but returned to Berlin, where he was then arrested and forced to work. His wife Paula and daughter Bela were deported and murdered to Auschwitz.
The initiative to relocate the stumbling blocks for the Landeck family was started by relatives or descendants of the victims of National Socialism. Since 2017, the district office has been financing the laying of stumbling blocks that are initiated by family members. The district council of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg supported this decision.
The laying of the stumbling blocks for the Landeck family will take place on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at 3 p.m. at Friedrichsberger Straße 7 in Berlin. This commemorative event should remind of the atrocities of the past and keep the memory of the victims.
