Urban development: Senate draws development plans

Urban development: Senate draws development plans
The press release No. 151 of June 4, 2024 deals with the withdrawal of responsibility for the development plan VI-140CAB "Urban Mitte Süd" and the political positions of the Senate regarding outdated construction projects. The decision DS/1047/VI of the District Assembly (BVV) provides to rethink the "Urban Mitte" high -rise ensemble and to make the development plan procedure open to the results. This decision sets a strong signal for participatory urban development. As a result of Corona pandemic, the need for office space has decreased, which shows the need for adjustments to the project.
The years of the Senate, which had been threatening the years, has prevented the district office and BVV from making fundamental changes to the “Urban Mitte” project. This compulsory mechanism was only questioned by an expert opinion in 2023. The district parliaments have the right to make plan changes and should not be restricted in their planning sovereignty.
During the development plan for the "Urban Middle South" was taken over by the Senate, the procedure for the "Urban Mitte Nord" is still resting. This project includes five office hollow houses with a significant impact on the park on the Gleisdreieck. The BVV, environmental associations and the city society have expressed criticisms of this project. It remains to be seen whether the Senate will also take responsibility here.
Overall, the press release shows the challenges and opportunities in the urban development of Berlin, especially in connection with the projects "Urban Middle South" and "Urbane Mitte Nord". The efforts to review the urban planning goals should continue to find an appropriate compromise that takes into account the needs of the city and its residents.
