Play street campaign days: car-free zone for children in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

game and movement in urban space: temporary play streets bring joie de vivre to Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

On September 20 and 22, 2024, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg became a place where children and families can discover the streets as a playground. On the occasion of World Children's Day and the International Car Free Tag, a total of 35 temporary play streets will be set up in Berlin, which promote playing in the city and set an example of environmentally friendly mobility.

This initiative, which is now being carried out for the fifth time, takes place with the support of the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate and Environmental Protection. During the campaign, certain sections of roads are to be blocked for motorized traffic and bicycles. This creates space for creativity -promoting activities that benefit both the physical and social development of our youngest fellow citizens.

activities and place of playing areas

Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg will be represented on both days of the campaign with a total of five different game streets, where children and adolescents can learn a kind of traffic safety and at the same time have a lot of fun. The exact locations have been carefully selected to give residents and their families the opportunity to experience their neighborhood in a playful way.

  • Friday, September 20:
    - Singerstrasse (between Kraut and Andreasstraße), 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
    - Wrangelstrasse (between Oppelner and Sorauer Straße), 3.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.
  • Sunday, September 22nd:
    -Niederbarnimstraße (house no. 18-22), 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
    -Forster Straße (between Reichenberger Strasse and Paul-Linke-Ufer), 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
    -Richard-Sorge-Straße (between Mühsam- und Straßmannstraße), 2 to 6 p.m.

The common goal: promotion of the community and environmental protection

A central aspect of the temporary play streets is the promotion of neighborhood initiatives that strengthen the community by organizing these actions. It is important that citizens are actively involved in the design of their living environment in order to create a sense of community and to increase the quality of life in the city. Such actions not only contribute to improving social interaction, but also sensitize to topics such as environmental and climate protection.
