Schloßstraße becomes the green town square: Steglitz in change!

In Steglitz, a new urban square could soon be created, which will fundamentally change the face of the district. The intersection between Schloßstraße, under the oak and Wolfensteindamm, which is strongly dominated by traffic today, is to be converted into an inviting town square. This was presented as part of the exhibition "Always Modern! Berlin and its streets", as developing city.de . The architects Bernd Albers and Ens Architects have developed three measures together with the FH Potsdam, which are intended to significantly increase the quality of life in this traffic.

Schloßstraße is not only one of the most important shopping miles in Berlin, but also a place that suffers from the pressure of motorized traffic. Historical structures have largely disappeared, and the dense traffic routing has severely affected the original quality of life. The Steglitz-Zehlendorf district has long tried to redesign public space to increase the attractiveness of Schloßstraße.

a place for people

The proposed measures aim to expand the space for pedestrians and cyclists. The lanes of Schloßstraße are to be reduced to strengthen the boulevard flair. It is also planned to recreate the A103 motorway on four lanes and to transform the areas obtained into a parkway. The Wolfensteindamm is converted into a neighborhood road to calm local traffic. "This place will once again do justice to its historical dimension. Pedestrians and cyclists will determine the cityscape, not the cars," explains Silvia Malcovati, architect with Bernd Albers Architects.

In the center of the new square, calm zones and shaded seating are intended to invite you to linger. A new landmark should additionally upgrade the space. The idea is to design the space so that it is clearly separated from hectic road traffic. This could not only improve the quality of life of the residents, but also boost tourism by becoming a popular meeting place.

challenges in implementation

The implementation of these visionary plans could, however, encounter resistance. The financability of the project and political reservations in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district could make realization difficult. The conversion of Breitenbachplatz has already shown how challenging such projects can be. Smaller projects, such as the redesign of Hermann-Ehles-Platz, could be realized more easily. Specific plans for the coming year are already scheduled for the place at the Rathaus Rathaus Rathaus Steglitz, which can be viewed as the first step towards a more attractive Steglitz, such as Developmentstadt.de reported.

The vision for Schloßstraße and the adjacent areas is clear: a place that not only serves the needs of drivers, but also focuses on people. The plans could make a decisive contribution to the recovery of the quality of life in Steglitz and make the district a living and inviting place.
