A green oasis on the Görlitz bank: the conversion of sealed areas into natural flower areas

In a current press release of 25.03.2024, it is announced that the areas on the Görlitzer bank in Berlin are redesigned to natural flower areas under the direction of the environmental and nature conservation office. The integration of biodiversity elements should be upgraded to create habitat for domestic species.

The bottom of the surfaces is prepared with a sand-gravel mixture and provided with thermally treated compost as the basis for the seed mixture. It will take around three to six weeks for the first flowering effects to be visible. By implementing the principle of the sponge city, the concentration of water in the event of heavy rain events is favored by creating light structures with minimal lowering.

In addition, hardwood trunks on the edges of the areas should not only ensure the protection of young wild plants and perennials, but also contribute to the extension of the habitat. Growth care will take place over a period of three years to support the development of the areas and to create habitats for pollinator -friendly insects and small wild animals.

In the Seetaat, various bio-certified seed mixtures are used, which are mixed with quartz sand and incorporated into the soil. The sustainable maintenance of the areas is carried out by relay mowing with a beam mower as well as hand jate and sorting of invasive plants to promote biodiversity.

The district office invites neighboring daycare centers and schools to participate in replanting early bloomers in autumn in order to make an important contribution to wild bees. The pupils will be able to see the results of their commitment next spring.

Overall, the conversion of the sealed areas on the Görlitz bank represents an important step towards nature conservation and biodiversity and contributes to the creation of green oases in the city.
