On Saturday, February 24, 2024, the ruling mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, will give Russia on Ukraine on the two -year anniversary of Russia's annual anniversary of the international law, defending peace/#Victoryforpeace. The demonstration with the Motto "defend peace" will take place from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brandenburg Gate and was launched by the Berlin Association of Vibits together with over 50 German and Ukrainian organizations from civil society, culture and politics.
In his announcement, the ruling mayor Kai Wegner emphasizes the brave efforts of the Ukrainians, who have been fighting tirelessly for their lives, their identity and freedom for two years. He clearly condemns the aggressive approach of Russia under Putin and calls for solidarity and support for Ukraine. As a sign of connection, the Brandenburg Gate on Saturday evening will shine in the national colors of Ukraine, blue and yellow.
The relationship between Berlin and Kyiv was sealed on September 14, 2023 with the signing of the "Agreement on the partnership between the cities of Kyiv and Berlin" in the Red Rathaus. In this agreement, both cities are committed to democracy, freedom and the rule of law and commit themselves to mutual help in emergency situations. Since the beginning of the conflict, more than 460,000 people from Ukraine have reached Berlin, of which around 50,000 refugees live in the city today.
The Senate approved the report on the "Action Plan Ukraine in Berlin" on February 20, 2024 to support the needy Ukrainian refugees in the city. In addition, help offers such as the hotline under the number +49 30 90 127 127, which can be reached from Monday to Saturday in Ukrainian, Russian, German and English. The association Vitschen e.V., an association of people from Ukraine in Germany, is committed to protests, cultural and educational events as well as humanitarian aid for Ukraine and supports refugees.
Overall, the solidarity demonstration "Defend peace/#Victoryforpeace" shows the close connection and support between Berlin and Ukraine in an age in which international solidarity and cohesion are of crucial importance.
