Mobile phone collection in Berlin: Recycing valuable raw materials and avoiding garbage

Mobile phone collection in Berlin: Recycing valuable raw materials and avoiding garbage

In cooperation with the non-profit association Inkota-Netzwerk e. V. conducts the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office. Boxes were set up in several locations of the city library in which old mobile phones can be handed over. The mobile phones are then processed or properly disposed of so that the raw materials contained can be recycled.

The district central library Pablo Neruda and the Wilhelm Liebknecht/Namik Kemal center library are the district central library. Clara Herrmann, district mayor of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, emphasizes the importance of sustainable use of raw materials and avoiding garbage. The campaign is part of the district zero-waded strategy and is intended to help reduce raw material consumption and to reduce environmental degradation in raw material mining in the countries of the global south.

According to statistics, German citizens buy a new mobile phone every 18 to 24 months on average. In 2022 alone, around 22 million new mobile phones were bought in Germany. Old or defective devices are often not repaired for cost reasons and professional recycling is also neglected. This leads to increased raw material consumption and potential human rights violations as well as environmental destruction in the mining areas.

A table for clarification of the statistical connection between the purchase of mobile phones and raw material consumption could look like this:

| Year | Number of purchased mobile phones in Germany |
| —— | —————————————— |
| 2020 | 20 million |
| 2021 | 21 million |
| 2022 | 22 million |

The cell phone collection of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district is therefore an important step towards sustainable use of resources and environmental protection.
