Inaugurated plaques for labor migration in Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg
On Tuesday, March 26, two plaques for labor migration are solemnly unveiled in Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. The locations where the plaques are attached are a former dormitory of AEG Telefunken in Kreuzberg and the state-owned operation of Berlin carburetor and filter works in Frankfurter Allee in Friedrichshain. District Mayor Clara Herrmann, together with other speakers
migrant workers, who are often referred to as "contract workers" and "guest workers", have made a significant contribution to the history and development of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The plaques will highlight their history and influences on the district and emphasize the importance of migrants for the history of democratization.
District Mayor Clara Herrmann emphasizes the importance of recognition and memory of the role of migrant workers in the city and in the district. She sees the plaques as an overdue appreciation for those who were significantly involved in the development and structure of Berlin, but were previously underrepresented in the memorial landscape.
The unveiling of the plaques is part of the district diversity commemoration and is intended to make the history and contributions of labor migrants visible in West and East Berlin and to be enrolled in the collective memory.
It is important to maintain the memory of the past and to honor the diversity of history and society. The plaques serve as monuments that represent the importance of the migrant labor for Berlin and especially for the districts of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg.
