As a citizen of Berlin, it is important that we are aware of the local importance the 1938 pogrom night in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. In the night of November 10, 1938, synagogues were set on fire in this district and Jewish shops and facilities were destroyed. The synagogue on the banks of the Fraenkel was also not spared and was badly damaged. A full fire was only prevented by happy circumstances. The Lippmann-Tuss synagogue, which had existed since 1776, was at the time of the pogrom night at Friedenstraße 3.

District Mayor Clara Herrmann emphasizes the importance of the memorial day and the need to actively work against any forms of anti -Semitism. She emphasizes that Jewish fellow citizens have to feel safe in Germany at any time.

It is crucial that we, as a society, maintain the memory of the pogrom night and the subsequent systematic persecution and murder of European Jews. Through memorial events like this we can ensure that the horrors of the past are not forgotten and that we learn from history to combat any form of discrimination and hatred.
