The Friedrichshainer Kiez am Ostkreuz faces a large change! The streets that are intended for residents, students and craftsmen are finally intended for the right users! The district office fully has the nose of overcrowded car traffic, which endangers the citizens and causes noise. A brave traffic calming concept was presented in June, which is now starting in the decisive phase!

The residents breathe up! The idyll of the Eastern Cross Kiez will soon return-and in three powerful levels! First, the campaign focuses on the northern area between Frankfurter Allee and Boxhagener Straße. Here the Niederbarnimstraße is closed to end the unrest of through traffic! One-way streets, bollards and even a school zone directly in front of the Jane Goodall elementary school are realized. The starting shot is still in November - good news for everyone!

a safe space for pedestrians

"The security for pedestrians will increase significantly," enthuses Annika Gerold, the district councilor for traffic. Thanks to the climate in this neighborhood, not only traffic safety will increase, but also the quality of life of the residents! The people who live here have incorporated their ideas and suggestions into numerous participation formats from the start. In autumn 2023 they were able to actively participate in the design of the traffic calming concept and their voices were heard!

The district office has created a solid basis with precise traffic counts and professional expertise. In addition to the residents, experts from the Berlin city cleaning (BSR) and transport companies (BVG) were also added and were ready to bring in their expertise. The result is a well thought-out concept that is intended to significantly reduce the stress caused by car traffic in the side streets. The plans also provide for special pedestrians that offer more space for safe traffic and relaxation.

The joyful expectation on less traffic

The goal is clear: a noticeable increase in traffic safety for pedestrians and the prevention of croissant wardrobes by the residential areas. Thanks to the upcoming school zones, the pupils can now come to school safer. For a real change, the introduction of opposite one -way streets and bicycle roads is also planned to reduce through traffic in the neighborhood to a minimum!

The citizens can be excited! Long -term evaluation is planned to monitor the traffic situation. Exact analyzes are carried out within six to twelve months after implementation to ensure that the measures are successful. If there are driven at short notice, react immediately!
