Friedrichshain: Cycle path makes space for pedestrians - construction work starts!

A superfluous cycle path on Frankfurter Allee in Berlin is now being broken down to offer the pedestrians more space. The bike strip, which was set up more than three years ago, has proven to be less practical. The district office plans to dismantle the former bike path on the north side of the Allee between Voigtstraße and Proskauer Straße to expand the sidewalk area and increase traffic safety. This is reported by the Tagesspiegel .

The pedestrian: Inside, the bike path on the other side of the avenue remains. The construction work is planned for the period from mid -April to July 2025. Wegenweg panels are laid and tree slices are enlarged, which is intended to increase the attractiveness and safety of the footpath. Transport councilor Annika Gerold emphasizes that the protection of pedestrians in road traffic is of great importance and the dismantling of the bike path is a necessity, since the former bike path is not used by the pedestrians:

further measures to improve the transport infrastructure

In addition to the changes to Frankfurter Allee, the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office announced the construction of new crossing aids. Some of these measures were created at the request of the residents. The planned crossings include:

  • sidewalk forward in the Weserstraße/Weichselstraße/Holteistrasse.
  • height -like redesign in the fish train/Bootsbauerstrasse.
  • Improvements of the access to the Engelwiese towards the Uferweg.
  • barrier -free crossing points on Petersburger Platz.

The traffic authorities want to make the sidewalks safer by creating these crossing aids, especially in critical places where pedestrians have to cross streets. According to a publication of the dvr are particularly at risk, especially near intersections and junctions, where many traffic accidents happen. The improvement of the infrastructure is therefore of great importance to increase security for everyone.

financing and challenges

The implementation of the new crossing aids could still fail due to financial resources. Some projects, such as planned crossings in Waldemannstrasse, are still waiting for the promises of the Senate Administration. District Mayor Clara Herrmann emphasizes the importance of promoting foot traffic and ensuring the protection of vulnerable groups.

The measures to secure foot traffic and the changes on the streets of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg show the efforts of the authorities to create a safe and inviting city environment. Until the completion of the construction work and the new crossing aids, the residents hope that their suggestions and needs will be adequately taken into account.
