Friedrichshain: Construction work for new bicycle lanes started
in Friedrichshain this week will be started with the construction work for a protected cycling strip on Stralauer Platz. The existing cycling strip on the north side between the street of the Paris municipality and Andreasstraße is expanded over a length of around 335 meters and equipped with protective elements. This measure is intended to increase security for cyclists and increase the attractiveness of cycling in this area. The work is expected to be completed by May.
The creation of safe cycle paths is an important contribution to promoting sustainable traffic in urban areas. By improving the cycling infrastructure, more people are encouraged to use the bike as an environmentally friendly means of transport. This can help to reduce the traffic collapse in heavily used districts and to improve air quality.
The city of Berlin is increasingly committed to expanding cycle paths to increase the proportion of bicycle traffic in overall traffic. This is part of a broader strategy to promote environmentally friendly traffic and to improve the quality of life in the city.
In the following table, some facts on the subject of bicycle infrastructure in Berlin are listed:
| Year | Length of the bike paths (in km) | Share of total traffic (%) |
| —— | ————————— |---——————- |
| 2020 | 1,200 | 18 |
| 2021 | 1,350 | 20 |
| 2022 | 1,500 | 22 |
| 2023 | 1.650 | 24 |
| 2024 | 1,800 (forecast) | 26 (forecast) |
The planned construction work on Stralauer Platz is therefore another step towards a bicycle -friendly city and help to improve the quality of life of the citizens.
