The role of women in the GDR: a discussion event in Berlin

On Thursday, September 12th, an revealing discussion event on the subject of "Women in Socialism - Women in the GDR" takes place in the Pablo Neruda . This event opens the conference of the same name the following day and is a significant opportunity to illuminate the complex role of women during the period of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

In today's social discussion, the different realities of life that women were confronted with is often discussed. While some voices recognize a form of self -empowerment, other women in the GDR see above all the consequences of an authoritarian regime, not propagated emancipation out of conviction, but as a state requirement. This different perception opens up space for deeper conversations and analyzes.

Important aspects of the discussion round are characterized by experts such as Henrike Voigtländer and Henriette Rodemerk, who deal with the history and experiences of women in the GDR. Michèle Matetschk-Delhaes will moderate the discussion and give valuable insights through her expertise to work the SED dictatorship.

This event is not only a look back at the past, but also a look into the future. The complex stories of the “East women” can offer important teachings for current and future generations, in particular regarding the subjects of equality and social participation. The results of the discussion could also make a contribution to how we think about gender roles and their social norms today.

The event starts at 6 p.m. and admission is free. Interested parties are invited to register in advance. It takes place in Frankfurter Allee 14a, 10247 Berlin , and is open to everyone who is interested in the topic.

This initiative is part of a collaboration between the Memorial Berlin-Hohenschönhausen , the chair for general history of the latest time University of Greifswald and the Berlin commissioner to deal with the SED dictatorship . Such cooperation are essential in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of history and their effects on today's social structures.
