Honorary afternoon for Audre Lorde: Neue Strasse inaugurated in Kreuzberg
On June 28, 2024, Audre-Lorde-Straße and a commemorative sign for Audre Lorde will be inaugurated in Kreuzberg with a ceremony. The inauguration ceremony is accompanied by various personalities, including district mayor Clara Herrmann, the head of the district council of Werner Heck as well as companions and fellow competitors by Audre Lorde, such as Katharina Oguntoye, Dr. Marion Kraft, Dagmar Schultz, Tahir Della and Jasmin Eding. The Berlin Band 3 Women, the Friendship Choir of Joliba e.V. and the artists and Poet*in Lahya Aukongo, take over the musical and artistic design, the event is moderated by Dr. Cassandra Ellerbe.
The name of the street to Audre Lorde was decided in February 2019 by the district assembly. Audre Lorde, an African-American poet and activist, still has an important role in feminist, queer, lesbian, black and women-of-color movements worldwide. It was committed to citizens' rights, peace and the networking of black people, played a central role in the development of the black feminist movement in Germany and significantly shaped the women's movement.
The name of a street to Audre Lorde is considered an important step towards more representation of LGBTQIA*, black people and people of color in public space. District Mayor Clara Herrmann emphasized the importance of this street naming as recognition for Audre Lorde's contribution to diversity, equality and intercultural dialogue.
The event is carried out in cooperation with "decolonial culture of memory in the city". Media contact is available for further information.
