The Görlitz bank in Berlin is being redesigned: more space for cycling and foot traffic, dismissed areas and green oases.

The Görlitzer bank in Berlin will be redesigned and the area between the Görlitzer Park and the Landwehr Canal will be reserved for cycling and foot traffic in the future. The road section has already been partially devoted and will be rebuilt in the next few weeks. There is a two -way bike path with a width of four meters and in the northern part of the Görlitz bank, seating and sports equipment are set up. A total of around 1000 square meters of area are sealed and greened. Local residents can report to the district next spring to take over the care of these areas.

According to the district councilor Annika Gerold, it is part of the sponge city concept to create more sealed areas for better rainwater management in densely populated neighborhoods. In Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, further signaling projects have already been implemented, such as on Lausitzer Platz, in Graefekiez and at the Schleidenplatz.

In autumn 2021, a participation process took place on site, in which the road section was temporarily closed for four days. In the course of the construction project, existing structural elements and surfaces should be preserved as far as possible. Construction begins in calendar week 42 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. During the construction period, the Görlitz bank remains closed to car traffic, but bicycle traffic and emergency vehicles can continue to drive.
