Berlin's security in the crisis: dozens of murderers at large!

In Berlin, the feeling of security of the citizens increases in a worrying way. According to a survey by the B.Z., in which 120 Berliners from various districts took part, people feel relatively safe, especially in the central parts of the city such as Mitte and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, while in areas such as Neukölln and Lichtenberg there is a strong feeling of uncertainty. It is particularly striking that women feel significantly more insecure than men, as several women reported in the interviews. Educator Nergiz announced that her feeling of security has dropped sharply since Corona pandemic, and 48,254 registered assault offenses show that this feeling is not unfounded. According to this statistics, there was an increase of 3,800 cases in 2023 - the highest value in the past ten years, as the B.Z. emphasized.

The situation is even more tense through new information about convicted criminals who are at large. At the moment, 59 convicted murderers and 57 suspects are still in freedom. These alarming messages come at a time when public fear of crime probabilities is growing. Right -wing expert Sebastian Keyberg criticizes the situation and demands a determined approach of the judiciary, while he wonders how responsible politicians can sleep calmly at night. These perpetrators are sought with arrest warrants, but the measures of the authorities are obviously inadequate. There was also an increase in open arrest warrants in Berlin. In July 2023 there were 8,581 compared to 7,953 in the previous year, a further evidence of the ongoing challenges in front of which the Berlin judiciary is facing live, as Berlin reports live. The critics express the suspicion that some convicted murderers are not immediately detained as long as their judgments are not yet final, which raises essential questions about the safety of the population.
