Friedenau benefits: 30 new tree slices for more green and less heat

Friedenau benefits: 30 new tree slices for more green and less heat

In the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district, there are significant changes on the program that will affect the cityscape and the climate. The planned dismissal measures take concrete forms, because around 30 tree slices in Friedenau are to be expanded in 2024. This initiative pursues the goal of promoting the health of the street trees and improving the infiltration of rainwater. The focus is on the tree slices on Taunusstraße, Deidesheimer Straße and Görressstraße.

One of the driving forces behind this project is the district councilor Dr. Ellenbeck, which underlines the importance of the measure. By sealing the areas, the administration wants to achieve an improvement in environmental conditions, especially in highly compressed areas, where the space for plants and trees is often severely restricted. The adjustments should not only help to ensure that more water can seep away on site, but also reduce the increase in temperature in urban metropolitan areas. These heat islands are a serious problem in the summer months that affects the quality of life of the residents.

The meaning of tree slices

Tree slices are the areas around the trunk of a tree, which are often covered by pavement or other hard materials. These areas play a crucial role in the health of the plants, especially in an urban environment. However, many of the existing tree slices in Friedenau are too small, so that the trees cannot absorb enough water. According to Dr. Ellenbeck should be an optimally designed tree disc at least 2 meters wide and 4 meters long, which results in an area of around 8 square meters.

The need for this measure becomes clear when you consider how essential water is for the growth and development of trees. In highly urbanized areas where concrete and asphalt prevail, the necessary natural supply of water is often missing. The expansion of the tree slices could therefore not only benefit the green appearance of the city, but also the air quality and the general city climate.

The commissioning already shows shows that those responsible in Tempelhof-Schöneberg are determined to implement these environmentally friendly changes promptly. The work should be completed by the end of the year and thus an important contribution to improving the microclimate in Friedenau should be made.

The approach of combining the hinge protection and strengthening of the urban trees is an innovative approach. At a time when climate change has increasingly noticeable effects, the aim of the district councilor to increase the resilience of urban ecosystems is of the greatest importance.
