Free University of Berlin: Dispute over refugee accommodation

The property on Thielallee 63 in Berlin-Dahlem is to be used by the Senate to build a container village for 260 refugees. However, this encountered resistance at the Free University of Berlin, as it would like to build a building for teaching and research. The university felt ignored because the university management had not given any approval to the Senate plans.

Free university had already provided support in the short -term accommodation of refugees in the past. However, she pointed out that the property in question is urgently needed for its own construction measures after 2023. The university proposed to use empty buildings of the Federal Real Estate Agency nearby, which were previously used for the accommodation of refugees.

It was decided to build 16 other container villages in Berlin, as there are too little living space for refugees. Even if the locations are mainly planned in the eastern part of the city, there is still resistance to new accommodations, as well as at the location of the Free University in Steglitz-Zehlendorf. There is ridicule on the FU Berlin on the net, otherwise it presents itself as cosmopolitan, but resistances against the temporary use of the parking lot for refugees on the university area.
