Free University of Berlin says anti -Semitic exhibition - outrage grows!
The Free University of Berlin has decided not to show an exhibition on anti -Semitic pogroms and the terrorist attack of Hamas on October 7, 2023. This decision has caused great lack of understanding, especially in view of the repeated anti -Semitic incidents at the university. According to reports from B.Z. it is signaled that the FU backs away from the critics and anti -Semites instead of clearly positioning itself against anti -Semitism. In order to avoid the hiking exhibition "The Teufelskreis" of the National Holocaust Museum, the university fears that it could lead to emotional conflicts and violent debates, which may be inappropriate.
Details about the exhibition and your cancellation
The exhibition is originally expected to be shown at the FU in February 2025, after a premiere in London on January 27th. It not only documents pogroms on Jewish communities from the Nazi era to the present, but also draws parallels between the Nazi's will to exterminate and today's attacks by Islamists, including Hamas. According to Maiken Umbach, the scientific director of the exhibition, anti -Semitic ideologies that accompanied each pogrom should be considered more closely.
The decision not to present the exhibition in the foyer of a university building is evaluated as a sign of the surrender of fear that violence could be triggered by anti -Semites again. While the FU grants an open scientific examination of the topics of the exhibition, it has so far rejected the opportunity to show the exhibition on her own campus. Instead, discussions are underway to find an alternative venue in Berlin, possibly at the University of the Arts, such as Welt.de reports.
