Continuation of the talks: Ampel coalition and Union are looking for migration compromise

In Berlin, leading politicians from the traffic light coalition and representatives of the Union meet in order to further discuss migration policy. Lower Saxony’s Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) emphasized after a first round of talks that the negotiations were perceived as trusting. In her opinion, the exchange was constructive and the Union had also brought itself as positive. Behrens expressed optimism about the possibility of reaching a wide -ranging agreement that includes all democratic forces.

The talks are of great relevance, especially in view of the latest developments in migration policy. Although the initial discussions showed progress, some Union representatives are skeptical about the suggestions of the traffic light coalition. They had presented a security concept last week, which in their view is not far -reaching enough. The focus here is particularly on the regulation of irregular migration.

Union claims to the traffic light coalition

The Union made it clear before the meeting that it expects an improvement in the measures that concentrate on the control of migration. The government's proposal, which became known under the name "Security Package", includes various strategies to combat security risks. These strategies include, among other things, a tightening of the rejects of rejected asylum seekers to their home countries and a strict handling of Islamist terror.

Against the background of a presumably Islamist attack in Solingen, in which three people were killed, the federal government offers these measures to promote a feeling of security among the population. The plan presented not only provides for the increased control of terrorism, but also a revision of weapons law. For many, this is a step in the right direction, but Union representatives believe that the measures are not sufficient to cope with the challenges of irregular migration.

The upcoming talks in the coming week should clarify how the parties can overcome the existing dissent. Behrens is confident that all parties are able to work on a consensus, the aim is to establish a comprehensive and effective policy. It remains to be seen whether the next meeting between the parties will create the necessary basis for an agreement that takes into account both the security concerns and takes into account the human treatment of migrants.
