FC St. Pauli: Dry defeat against Union Berlin in the second game

Stand: 30.08.2024 10:27 pm

On Friday evening, FC St. Pauli had to accept a bitterly defeat again. In their second Bundesliga game after the return, the Hamburgers remained without a goal and point what the concerns about relegation further fueled. Against Union Berlin, who only won their first victory under coach Bo Svensson on Friday, St. Pauli only allowed one goal shot, which indicates big problems on the offensive.

The team under coach Alexander Blessin simply couldn't get the defensive Berliner seriously in trouble. Instead, the home side on the "old forester's" proved that they were able to control the game and act more efficiently. The neighborhood club, which had 59 percent possession of the ball, could not make any real benefits from it. This clearly shows that in the Bundesliga you should not only have the ball, but should also know what to do with it.

Hollerbach meets with a deflected shot

The first noteworthy chance for Union was not long in coming. In the 30th minute, Yorbe tested the goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj with a powerful shot from 22 meters. Just a few minutes later it was Benedict Hollerbach who scored the first goal of the game. After an inaccurate defense campaign by St. Paulis Karol Mets, he took the ball directly on the penalty area, his shot was distracted by Mets and sank the ball on the net, which the Berliners brought in 1-0 in the first half.

st. Pauli tried to create pressure, but mostly remained lucky. A weak shot by Johannes Eggestein, who went directly into the arms of the Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow, was the only test in the first half. The Hamburg's offensive does not seem to have arrived at the level of the league and that is an alarming news after two games.

dzwigata spectacular-but unsuccessful

Even in the second round, Union remained the superior team, even if the offensive was no longer as mandatory as in the first half of the game. The pressure of the Hamburgers only grew in the last 15 minutes. Once it was Adam Dwigata who could have tipped the game with a spectacular fall back, but his attempt flew past the goal. In injury time there was still a shot from Oladapo Afolayan, but this attempt could not seriously challenge Rönnow.

With this achievement St. Pauli leaves a bowl after taste and the pressure on the Hamburgers increases, because the league is hard and the competition for relegation is becoming increasingly challenging. Union, on the other hand, can look positively into the future, as you have to travel to Leipzig after the successful start, while St. Pauli will travel to Augsburg on Sunday.
