First exemption from Feldhamstern in Lower Saxony: a glimmer of hope

resettlement of the Feldhamster: One step to rescue in Lower Saxony

The latest release of 24 field hamsters near Göttingen represents significant progress in nature conservation. This measure is not only a sign of change in attitude to biodiversity, but also an example of how committed nature conservation projects can contribute to the preservation of endangered animal species.

The area in which the field hamsters were exposed was carefully prepared. The approximately one hectare area offers optimal habitat with pre -drilled holes, water points and plantings. This was made possible by the initiative of the Association AG Feldhamster Protection Lower Saxony and the financial support of the Heinz Sielmann Foundation. Such projects are crucial because they contribute to the return of species that have been severely impaired in the past.

Although the field hamsters were once considered pests, the view of this species has changed. They play an important role in the ecosystem by improving soil quality and serving as prey for predators. The disappearance of the field hamsters has negative effects on biodiversity, which underlines the importance of protective measures. The field hamster, which now enjoys special protection as a FFH art (flora fauna habitat), is an example of the successes that can be achieved through targeted nature conservation measures.

The release project continues over a period of two years, whereby new animals are to be added regularly. Nina Lipecki, the first chairman of the association, is optimistic: "We expect the hamsters to reproduce themselves this year." The new population is monitored by wild cameras and regular controls by project employees. This is crucial to support the adaptation of the animals to their new habitat.

These expense adjustments are not only important for the continued existence of the field hamsters, but also for other species required such as the vineyards that benefit from the same measures. Historical reports show that Feldhamster were once in this region before they were pushed back for various reasons. Today a new settlement is a promising step.

The resettlement of the Feldhamster near Göttingen is not only a local event, but also symbolically stands for a wider trend towards more engagement in nature conservation. In times of climate change and species death, such projects are essential to maintain our valuable natural habitat. With the support of the foundation and the community, hope for a revival of the once diverse wildlife can arise. The commitment of the Heinz Sielmann Foundation and the AG Feldhamster Protection Lower Saxony is a step in the right direction to promote and secure biodiversity in Lower Saxony.
