A groundbreaking event is imminent: the inauguration of the first drug consumption room in the Free State of Bavaria. This innovative project is intended to save lives and prevent infections with HIV and hepatitis. Munich, host city of the 25th International AIDS conference AIDS2024, will finally introduce a highly effective standard measure of HIV prevention and damage minimization. The German Aidshilfe and numerous other organizations and institutions have jointly invited to this historical event.

One of the speakers at the inauguration will be Burkhard Blienert, the representative for the Federal Government's addiction and drug issues. Verena Dietl, the mayor of the city of Munich, and Katrin Bahr, the managing director of Condrobs e.V., will also keep her speeches. Stefan Miller, board member of the German Aidshilfe, and Dirk Schäffer, consultant for drugs and prison, will also speak and share their perspectives on this important project.

The drug consumption room is located at Fraunhofer Straße 21 in Munich and is accessible to the public from July 19, 2024 at 10 a.m. This room offers the option of providing clean syringes and consumer utensils, providing first aid for overdoses with an emergency medication and moving drug use into a protected space. In addition, far -reaching offers of help can be made.

The establishment of drug consumption is recommended by the World Health Organization WHO and has established itself internationally as an effective measure to combat HIV and for damage minimization. Although Germany has legally allowed the establishment of such rooms since 2000, seven federal states, including Bavaria, have so far refused to issue the necessary legal ordinance. This project in Munich therefore marks an important step forward.

Following the inauguration, an event for the deceased drug use will take place on Marienplatz on the same day at 11:30 a.m. This event serves to remember those who died early due to drug use.

The German Aidshilfe is not only the initiator of this inauguration, but also an official cooperation partner of the 25th International Aids Conference. This makes it clear how important this drug consumption space is for HIV prevention and damage minimization.

The inauguration of the first Bavarian drug consumption room is carried out in cooperation with many other organizations and institutions, including doctors in the world, the German Caritasverband e.V., the Munich AIDS-Hilfe e.V. and others. The importance of this facility cannot be underestimated. It will not only protect the life of drug users, but also help to contain the number of HIV infections and the spread of other transferable diseases.
